Group To Troupe

Group to Troupe Facilitator Trainings

There are many reasons that groups of people gather together. Whether the initial draw is spiritual, social, therapeutic or issue oriented, group facilitators are faced with the challenge of stimulating participant engagement. "Group to Troupe” presentations are designed for group facilitators who interested in invigorating their sessions with playfulness and personal storytelling. As a long-time creative enrichment specialist, Broomberg understands the ways in which interactive exercises engender intimacy and development through collaboration. This workshop can be offered in a participatory format to groups of up to 30 participants or in a lecture format with audience members volunteering to show how the forms are applied.

Objectives:
1. To create a safe working environment for participants to experiment with new ways to work in and with groups.
2. To demonstrate theatrical forms that are easily replicable and adaptable and to explore the benefits and possible challenges of each form. 3. To discuss the ways in which performance oriented group work can be a tool for personal and group growth.
4. To show that an easy to assemble group showcase can become a tool for community dialogue

Outline:
Introduction: An overview of different ways to build safety while doing interactive group work, the sanctity of incremental process development and an outline of common time and space concerns. Demographic Overview: An introduction to four easy to use demographic exercises that are fairly low risk common denominator establishers. The use of these forms leads to the establishment of a foundation for more intimate group work. Sinking in and Reaching Out: Extending the capacity to use voice and body as communication tools: An overview of exercises designed to encourage participant extension of vocal and physical range with consciousness of personal or group reactivity.

Talking Points:
This section will introduce facilitators to a range of interactive story telling forms that can be used individually, in pairs, small groups and with full groups.

Problem Solving:
Calming, grounding and focusing activities assist facilitators in keeping the group on track and relaxed with participants feeling in touch with their bodies and in control of their choices.
Opening, Closing and Tight Containers
Group safety is premised on clear boundaries and expectations. This section of the workshop will address ways to open and close sessions cleanly and how to keep each activity contained so that other participants are neither triggered by each other nor overwhelmed by what is asked of them.

Comments:
Many group facilitators are looking for innovative, experiential group activities. The activities in “Group to Troupe” are accessible, practical and adaptable. They encourage participants to engage with the group process from a holistic vantage point that emphasizes that there are many ways to extend the range of how one communicate one’s feelings and ideas; verbal, physical, non- verbal, spatial and through play.
